Director of Marketing

The Director of Marketing leads the organization’s marketing strategy to elevate
brand visibility, engage key audiences, and drive the success of our programs,
events, and initiatives. Reporting directly to the Head of Operations, this role
integrates strategic thinking, compelling storytelling, creative design, and
exceptional project management to ensure that our marketing efforts align with the
organization’s values of ambition, action, and connection. This role demands a
strategic and creative thinker who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial
environment and is passionate about supporting entrepreneurs and startups.

To continue fulfilling our mission and advancing our vision, the Director of Marketing needs to ensure our key audiences know about The Mill. About The Mill

The Dimension Mill, Inc. ("The Mill") is Bloomington’s nonprofit center for entrepreneurship and innovation. Our mission is to build and nurture Bloomington’s startup ecosystem by discovering, launching, and accelerating high-growth companies. As the heart of the Trades District, we play a key role in advancing Bloomington’s economic development, fostering ambitious entrepreneurs, and driving impactful innovation.

Position Overview

The Mill is seeking an inspiring, strategic, and action-oriented Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead our organization into its next phase of growth. The CEO will be responsible for advancing The Mill’s mission by strengthening entrepreneurial programs, developing strategic partnerships, and expanding access to capital for startups. This is a unique opportunity for a visionary leader to shape the future of innovation in Bloomington.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Vision

  • Champion The Mill's vision of becoming Indiana’s center for tech entrepreneurship.
  • Develop and execute strategic initiatives that fuel startup growth and strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
  • Lead The Mill’s transformation into a high-performing organization that delivers measurable impact.

Operational & Financial Excellence

  • Oversee The Mill’s operations, finances, and team to ensure long-term sustainability and high performance.
  • Establish operational best practices that enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Secure funding, sponsorships, and investment capital to sustain and grow The Mill’s programs.

Ecosystem & Innovation District Development

  • Cultivate and expand relationships with startups, investors, corporate partners, universities, and government entities.
  • Play a key role in the development of the Trades District as Bloomington’s premier innovation hub.
  • Advocate for policies and initiatives that foster tech entrepreneurship and economic growth.

Community Engagement & Culture Building

  • Lead The Mill in building a generous community that actively supports tech entrepreneurs.
  • Serve as a dynamic spokesperson, elevating The Mill’s presence regionally and nationally.
  • Foster a culture of ambition, action, and connection within The Mill and its broader ecosystem.
Skills & Experience Requirements

Required Skills & Experience

  • Leadership Experience: Minimum 5+ years in executive leadership roles, preferably in entrepreneurship, economic development, venture capital, or a high-growth business environment.
  • Entrepreneurial & Ecosystem Knowledge: Deep understanding of startup ecosystems, innovation districts, and economic development strategies.
  • Fundraising & Capital Development: Proven success in securing grants, sponsorships, venture capital, or philanthropic investments.
  • Strategic Planning & Execution: Ability to develop and implement high-impact initiatives that align with The Mill’s strategic pillars.
  • Business & Financial Acumen: Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, forecasting, and revenue generation.
  • Stakeholder & Partnership Management: Experience building coalitions with local, regional, and national partners, including government, corporate, and university stakeholders.
  • Communication & Public Speaking: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to advocate for The Mill at conferences, investor meetings, and public forums.
  • Team Leadership & Culture Building: Track record of inspiring, managing, and developing high-performing teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience launching and scaling a tech-based startup.
  • Experience leading a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
  • Knowledge of venture capital, angel investing, and startup financing.
  • Familiarity with public-private partnerships and innovation districts.
  • Master’s degree in business, economic development, entrepreneurship, or related field (preferred but not required).
